About Michael Ennis
A dedicated community member committed to representing the district with integrity, transparency, and genuine care for local issues.

Vision for the District
Building a sustainable future for the Hurunui District through effective local governance, community engagement, and responsible development that preserves our unique character while embracing necessary growth.
Personal Background
Background and Community
I live on a lifestyle block in Balcairn with my wife, Lorna, and our beloved dog Gizmo. Born in Christchurch and raised in Wanganui, I lived in Auckland for the past 20 years before moving to the Hurunui District.
Lorna and I moved to the Hurunui District because we wanted to live on a lifestyle block in a small, close-knit community in Canterbury. After researching the area, Amberley came up as the best place for our new lifestyle.
We are actively invested in the future of the district and want to see it thrive for current and future generations while maintaining the charm and character of our small rural communities.

Vision for South Ward
Community-Centered Governance
I believe in putting the community at the heart of every decision. Regular consultation, open communication, and transparent processes are essential for effective local government.
Balanced Development
Supporting growth that benefits everyone while preserving what makes the district special. Economic development must go hand-in-hand with environmental protection and community wellbeing.
Practical Solutions
Focusing on real, achievable improvements that make a difference to daily life. From better roads to improved services, every decision should deliver tangible benefits.
Transparency & Accountability
Ensuring that council decisions are made openly, with clear reasoning and community input. Residents deserve to know how their rates are spent and why decisions are made.
My Commitment to the District
If successful in being elected, I intend to be a councillor that listens to the concerns of ratepayers and presents this to the council. I will be a strong advocate for the community I represent.
Your voice matters, and I will ensure it's heard at every council meeting.
My Priorities
It's important to me that the community is involved and aware of the decisions the council is making on their behalf.
- Open and transparent decision-making processes
- Regular community consultation and engagement
- Clear communication about council activities and decisions
- Accessible meetings and information for all residents
It's vital that all financial decisions made by the council are fiscally responsible and that the council remembers whose money they are making decisions with.
- Careful scrutiny of all council spending
- Value-for-money assessments on major projects
- Transparent budgeting and financial reporting
- Ensuring ratepayer funds are used wisely and effectively
Councils should not get distracted and must remain focused on their core functions in support of the community as a whole.
- Prioritize essential services and infrastructure
- Ensure core services are delivered efficiently
- Avoid mission creep and unnecessary projects
- Focus on what councils do best for the community
Now that the decision has been made to form a Water Services Council Controlled Organisation with Kaikōura District Council, it's vital that appropriate and efficient oversight is in place to ensure the WSCCO delivers.
- Ensure effective governance and accountability
- Monitor service delivery and performance standards
- Maintain strong oversight of financial management
- Ensure the WSCCO serves community interests effectively
